"My name is Naomi M. Ruiz Ortiz. Many call me Omi. I was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1982. According to many, I have been drawing since I could grasp a pencil. I drew sunsets on boxes with colored chalk, and at the age of eight tried my hand at manga-styled drawing. For a long time, shoujo-manga-styled characters were all I cared to draw, and I desperately wanted to become an animator (in Japan, no less!). I studied art at Skidmore College, seeking a better understanding of color and more realistic physical portrayals of people. I quickly found my artistic voice in a combination of the manga style I'd cultivated for so long and model studies of the very patient women who posed in my classes.I moved to New York City, where I studied animation and decided it was no longer for me. I focused instead on keeping my sanity in The City. I had an enlightening time working at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan for a couple of years; it was amazing to just take my breaks somewhere within the six floors of amazing art! I learned as I worked, and it was truly amazing.Despite the excitement of city life and working in a famous art museum, I left New York in 2006. I am currently in Northern California. Despite being so far away, everyone has been so supportive of my work. This website is dedicated to them, and to the other artists whose best mode of expression involves color, brush strokes, lines, and shapes. Why "Subtitled Omi"? & Other Artistic PhilosophiesI have an incredibly hard time talking about my work, despite the fact that it's quite simple-looking. I realize now that it is because my work explains me, my internal landscape, in ways that words have failed to do when I try them on. My paintings are depictions of emotions, as a woman senses them. My work serves as my subtitles while I stumble to find the right words... That brings me to a question I've often been asked. It's been noted that my work prominently features female figures. The reason why is simply this: Throughout my life, I have witnessed the secrets, sacrifices, love, anger, hatred, courage, and tenderness women feel and live. To me, we are intricate, intense, deep wells that never lack grace and beauty, even through nightmarish events in our lives. As I continue to meet women I admire, I am constantly inspired to take in their stories, their laments, their joys, their dancing, and put it on paper hoping that I will be able to do it all some justice."
